With options like low odour solvents, non-caustic paint strippers and targeted wood treatments, Barrettine makes it easier to get a professional finish across a wide range of projects.

Which Barrettine product do I need?

Removing paint and varnish: For heavy-duty jobs and older coatings, use Barrettine Peelaway 1 Paint Remover. For modern paints or more delicate surfaces, choose Barrettine Peelaway 7 Paint Remover. For quicker jobs and vertical surfaces, Barrettine Paint Panther Paint Stripper is ideal.
Use a Barrettine Metal Scraper to remove softened paint.

Cleaning and preparing before painting: Use Barrettine Sugar Soap Concentrate to remove grease, dirt and nicotine. For degreasing or final wipe-downs, try Barrettine Methylated Spirits or Barrettine Low Odour White Spirit.

Cleaning tools and restoring brushes: Barrettine Low Odour White Spirit is great for everyday cleaning. Or for hardened brushes, use Barrettine Paint Brush Restorer.

Protecting exterior wood: Use Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment for sheds, fences and previously treated timber, which adds water resistance and helps prevent rot, mould and algae. Or Barrettine Log Cabin Treatment offers durable weather protection and enhanced appearance. And Barrettine All-In-One Decking Oil comes in a range of colours and offers brilliant protection.

Restorate is also proud to offer Barrettine CreoSolve, a low hazard, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional Creosote. This oil-based formula offers excellent water repellent properties for external timber, making it ideal for waterproofing fences and sheds. CreoSolve can also be used in conjunction with a range of Barrettine products, resulting in fantastic all-round protection for your timber.

Deep protection for bare or untreated wood: Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver deeply penetrates the wood to protect against rot, woodworm, algae and UV damage - ideal for timber that hasn’t been treated recently.

Enhancing interior or exterior wood: Barrettine Wood Oil nourishes and protects, while enhancing the grain and giving a durable, natural looking finish.

Treating common wood issues: Use Barrettine Woodworm Killer to treat infestations and Mould & Mildew Cleaner to remove mould and organic growth.

What’s the difference between Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver and Wood Protective Treatment?

Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver is a deep-penetrating, solvent-based treatment designed for bare or untreated timber. It soaks into the wood fibres to protect against rot, wood-boring insects and UV damage, making it ideal as a first stage of protection.

Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is designed more as a maintenance or top-up product. It protects the surface of previously treated wood, helping to repel water and prevent mould and algae, but does not penetrate as deeply as the preserver.

Do I need to treat new or pressure-treated wood?

New pressure-treated or tanalised timber doesn’t usually require Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver, but applying Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is a good idea to add extra protection and extend the life of the wood.

Does Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver seal the wood?

Yes. Barrettine Premier Wood Preserver is a deeply absorbing, solvent-based treatment that penetrates into the wood fibres, helping to protect from within rather than just sitting on the surface.

How do I deal with mould or staining on treated wood?

Surface mould can be removed using Barrettine Mould & Mildew Cleaner, applied gently along the grain with a soft brush. For best results, clean the surface before re-treating to prevent regrowth.

HELP! Why has my wood treatment dried poorly or unevenly?

This is usually due to application conditions or preparation. For example, applying to damp wood can cause a milky or cloudy finish, and applying too thickly can leave the surface tacky. Preparation is key, as poor mixing or uneven surfaces can lead to patchy results.

To fix these issues, lightly sand back, wipe with Barrettine Low Odour White Spirit, and reapply a thin, even coat under the correct conditions.

What’s the difference between Barretine Peelaway 1, Peelaway 7, and Paint Panther?

Peelaway paint removers are a system for removing up to 32 layers of paint or surface treatment, using a specially designed poultice and blankets that are used to lift the layers off.

Peelaway 1 is best for older, heavy-duty coatings and requires neutralisation thanks to its heavily alkaline formulation.

Meanwhile, Peelaway 7 is gentler, non-caustic and better suited to modern paints and delicate surfaces.

Paint Panther is more of a universal paint stripper - its a supremely effective, fast-acting gel ideal for smaller areas and vertical surfaces.

Can I use Barrettine products on any surface?

Not always. Some products are not suitable for plastics, certain metals or delicate finishes. Always check the product guidance and carry out a test patch before use.

Do I always need to do a test patch?

Yes. A test patch ensures compatibility, helps you judge coverage and confirms the best approach before starting the full job.
