Fiddes Naphtha Oil Stain is an oil based dye that should be applied to bare timber before sealing with Fiddes Shellac Sealer or a shellac polish. It absorbs thoroughly to produce a deep rich colour whilst highlighting the grain.Â
Naphtha Oil Stain dries more slowly than other spirit based dyes, which allows for better flexibility if colour matching or applying over a large surface area. This makes it a favourite with antique restorers and cabinet makers. Â
Preparation: Sand the wood in stages, starting with a P120 grit abrasive through to P180/240, working in the direction of the grain if possible. Remove all traces of dust with a tack cloth and then test the chosen colour on a similar substrate to confirm the shade that will be achieved.
Stir thoroughly and apply with a lint free cloth or sponge in the direction of the wood grain where possible. Immediately wipe away any excess with a clean absorbent cloth, again following the grain. Wipe evenly to obtain a uniform colour. One coat is usually sufficient but further coats can be applied if you wish to deepen the colour. There is no need to sand between coats.
