Accoya Recommended Products FAQs

What is Accoya wood?

Accoya is a sustainably sourced softwood that has been modified through acetylation. The process gives it exceptional durability and dimensional stability, making it particularly well suited to demanding exterior applications.

Why does Accoya need specialist products?

Accoya behaves differently from untreated wood, so products need to be compatible with its modified structure and long service life. Its exceptional dimensional stability affects how coatings and adhesives perform, while residual acidity can cause corrosion and staining with unsuitable metal fixings.

Why do I need specialist fixings with Accoya?

The acetylation process leaves a small amount of residual free acid in the wood. In the presence of moisture, this can cause unsuitable steel fixings to corrode and stain the surrounding wood. Stainless steel or brass fixings are therefore recommended for Accoya.

Does Accoya need to be coated?

Accoya can be left to weather naturally, but if you want to retain its colour and protect its appearance, an appropriate exterior wood finish should be applied. Specialist products such as Rubio DuroGrit and Osmo UV-Protection Oil are designed for this type of application.

Can I use normal wood adhesive on Accoya?

Because Accoya is exceptionally dimensionally stable, traditional water-based or standard PVA adhesives may not provide the permanent, stressed structural bond required. Specialist high-performance adhesives, such as polyurethane, epoxy, or EPI systems, are recommended instead.

Accoya is a highly durable and dimensionally stable modified wood - and because of this, choosing the right products is important to achieve the best results. Our range of Accoya recommended products includes coatings, oils, sealers, and other woodcare products suitable for use on Accoya, helping you protect the wood while achieving the finish you want.
