Rubio Monocoat DuroGrit FAQs

What is a water-based wood oil?

A water-based oil like DuroGrit is an emulsion where oil is dispersed in water. After application, the water evaporates and leaves behind a protective layer of oil on the wood.

Can I apply a second coat for even better protection?

Monocoat is formulated to give perfect coverage with just one coat. A second coat isn’t recommended, as it can result in film formation, which can lead to peeling or flaking. In exceptional cases, such as very weathered or grey wood, a more even colour may be achieved with a second coat - but this would need to be diluted with 20% water.

Does it work on every kind of wood?

In a word: yes. Colour selection may be dependent on wood type - please see description above or the technical specification sheet for details.

Can DuroGrit be diluted with water?

In most cases, dilution isn't required, but you can dilute with up to 20% water where wood is highly weathered or absorbant.

Rubio Monocoat DuroGrit is designed to deliver a professional, high-quality finish to all types of exterior wood - colouring and protecting in just one coat. With no need for primers or multiple layers, you save both time and product. It's easy to apply and is a practical choice whether you’re working on decking, cladding or garden furniture.

Behind the simplicity is Rubio's patented FibreGrit Technology, which combines natural oils with wood fibres to create a durable, breathable finish. DuroGrit is water and dirt repellent, and it’s highly resistant to UV damage, which helps slow down greying. The microporous finish won’t crack or peel, so you get long-lasting protection with less maintenance over time.

DuroGrit is available in a range of colours across two collections - Great Plains and Salt Lakes - each inspired by natural landscapes. These add rich tones, but  the transparency of the oil enhances the grain and allows the natural character of the wood to shine through.
