Osmo UV-Protection Exterior Wood Oil FAQs

Why choose Osmo UV Protection Oil?

Osmo UV Protection Oil helps protect exterior wood from sun damage, weathering, and UV-induced greying while enhancing the natural beauty of the timber. Its microporous, oil-based formula penetrates deeply into the wood without forming a thick surface film, helping prevent peeling, cracking, and flaking over time.

Suitable for doors, windows, cladding, fences, balconies, and other vertical exterior wood surfaces, it creates a water-repellent, breathable finish that also helps resist mould, algae, and fungal growth.

What surfaces can Osmo UV Protection Oil be used on?

It is designed for vertical exterior wood surfaces including: Cladding, windows and doors, fences and gates, balconies, garden buildings, and exterior joinery.

It is not recommended for decking or horizontal surfaces exposed to standing water.

What is the difference between Clear and Tinted UV Protection Oil?

The clear version preserves the natural appearance of the wood with a satin finish, while the Tinted versions add transparent colour pigments that enhance the wood grain and provide additional UV protection.

How do I apply Osmo UV Protection Oil?

1. Remove old paints, varnishes, and non-porous coatings.
2. Ensure the wood is clean, dry, and porous.
3. Apply a thin coat using a brush or microfibre roller, working along the grain.
4. Leave to dry for approximately 12 hours with good ventilation.
5. Apply a second coat if using as a standalone finish.

If applying over a coloured exterior oil as a UV protective top coat, one coat is usually sufficient.

Can Osmo UV Protection Oil be used over other finishes?

Yes. It can be used alone or as a protective top coat over compatible coloured exterior oils to help extend the life of the finish. If peeling does occur, this could be due to using too much product, or using it on an inappropriate surface, such as decking.

Does Osmo UV Protection Oil peel or flake?

No. Its breathable, microporous finish is designed not to crack, peel, or flake, making maintenance easier than many traditional exterior coatings.

Does it protect against mould and algae?

Yes. It contains active ingredients that help resist mould, algae, and fungal attack on exterior wood surfaces.

Should bare wood be treated first?

For maximum durability and protection against blue stain, rot, and insects, bare wood can first be treated with Osmo WR 4001 Base Coat.

Can I use it on weathered or grey wood?

Yes, but weathered timber should first be restored using Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel before application.

How do I maintain Osmo UV Protection Oil?

Clean the surface regularly and apply maintenance coats as required when the finish begins to look dry or faded. Recoating can usually be carried out without extensive sanding.

Osmo UV Protection Oil protects exterior wood from UV damage, greying, mould, and weathering with a breathable finish that won’t peel or flake.
