What is Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C?

Oil Plus 2C is a two-component interior wood oil that colours and protects timber in a single coat. Its molecular bonding technology allows the oil to bond with the wood fibres rather than forming a film on the surface, giving a durable finish with a natural look and feel. It can be used on furniture, worktops, stairs and floors, as well as other interior wood surfaces.

How do you apply Oil Plus 2C?

Prepare the bare timber by sanding to the appropriate grit and removing all dust. Mix three parts Component A with one part Component B, then apply the oil evenly with a beige pad or spatula. Allow it to absorb for a few minutes before removing all excess with a white pad or lint-free cloth. The surface is normally dry within 12–24 hours, with full curing taking up to five days.

Once Components A and B have been mixed, the product has a working life of approximately 4–6 hours, so only mix what you can use within that time.

Does Oil Plus 2C smell?

Oil Plus 2C has very low emissions and contains 0% VOCs. It's designed to produce minimal odour, making it suitable for use in occupied interior environments.

Do you have to sand before applying Oil Plus 2C?

Yes, when applying Oil Plus 2C to previously finished timber, the existing finish must be completely removed so the oil can come into contact with the raw wood fibres. For new or already bare timber, the surface should still be sanded to achieve optimal colour absorption. Rubio recommends finishing at 100-150 grit for furniture, stairs and worktops, and 100 grit for floors.

Can you apply Oil Plus 2C over an existing finish?

No. Oil Plus 2C needs direct contact with the raw cellulose in the timber to achieve its molecular bonding. Existing finishes therefore need to be removed before application, normally by sanding.

Can Oil Plus 2C be removed without sanding?

Yes, in order to remove the finish completely, sanding is required because Oil Plus 2C is bonded to the wood fibres. However, you don't need to sand when maintaining or refreshing a correctly treated surface. Worn or dry timber can often be refreshed with the appropriate maintenance product, and faded areas can be restored by reapplying Oil Plus 2C in the original colour without sanding.

How do you maintain Oil Plus 2C?

Keep the surface free from dust and dirt with regular vacuuming or dry cleaning. After the initial curing period, clean with a suitable Rubio Monocoat cleaner such as Universal Soap, Surface Care, or All Natural Wood Cleaner. When the surface starts to look dry, rough or more susceptible to staining, it can be refreshed with another coat of the same coloured oil.

How do you remove stains from Oil Plus 2C?

Universal Soap, Surface Care, and All Natural Wood Cleaner can deal with many everyday stains, while Grease Remover, Tannin Remover, and Limespot Remover are designed for more specific problems. If a stain has penetrated deeply into the timber, lightly sand the affected area and reapply Oil Plus 2C locally.

Can Oil Plus 2C be used on wooden floors?

Yes. In fact, the product was originally developed for wooden flooring before being adopted for furniture, worktops, stairs and other interior wood surfaces. The large 6-inch and 16-inch application pads are also designed for use with floor sanders and orbital sanders on larger surfaces.

How long does Oil Plus 2C take to cure?

The surface is normally dry within 12–24 hours, but full curing takes up to five days, with approximately 80% of the cure achieved within two days. Cleaning with a dry cloth can begin after two days, but cleaning with water and suitable cleaning products should wait until the five-day curing period is complete.

Does Oil Plus 2C need a topcoat?

No. Oil Plus 2C is designed to provide protection in a single coat and does not require a topcoat. For surfaces subject to particularly heavy liquid exposure or mechanical wear (e.g. commercial floors, or bar and restaurant furniture and worktops), Rubio recommends an optional coat of Universal Maintenance Oil after 36-48 hours, once the surface is completely dry.
