Mylands Traditional Wood Finishes FAQs

How do I prepare wood for staining?

Ensure the wood is clean, smooth and free of paint, oil, or previous stains. Consider using a wood sealer, which will provide an even surface ready for finishing with stain.

What's the difference between light-fast, nitrostain, earth and water-based stain?

Here's a quick summary:
Lightfast = a stain that resists fading in sunlight.
Nitrostain = solvent-based fast drying rich colour.
Earth stains = made with natural pigments that give gorgeous and subtle tones.
Water-based = easy to clean, low VOC stains are great for indoor application.

Can I use a wood stain on its own?

Stains are a great way to add colour to wood, but they need the help of a protective layer to provide durability (usually a wax, oil, or varnish).
