Imagine being able to refinish an entire restaurant of tables, on site and in one sitting. Handing over flawless, fully cured, ready to use, and food safe work with no solvent smell.
Done and dusted.
No drying racks.
No multi-day wait and return.
On to the next job.
For professional wood finishers, drying time has always been one of the biggest bottlenecks in the process. Whether you're manufacturing furniture, fitting out commercial interiors, producing bespoke joinery, or installing hardwood flooring, you've always had to build drying time into the job. Apply the finish, wait for it to dry, find somewhere safe to store the work, then wait some more for it to fully cure before it can be delivered, installed, or put into service.
Osmo has just solved this problem with one of the most significant developments in professional wood finishing in recent years.
Introducing Osmo LED Smart-Oil.
This specialist hard wax oil uses a dedicated high-intensity LED UV curing system to create a fully cured finish almost instantly. For professional users, that has the potential to transform production schedules, reduce storage requirements, and dramatically speed up project completion.
A hardwax oil that cures in seconds, not days
Osmo LED Smart-Oil is a professional-grade hard wax oil designed to be cured using the specially developed hand held UV LED Smartlight Pro Lamp. Unlike traditional hard wax oils that rely on oxygen and time to cure, LED Smart-Oil hardens rapidly when exposed to a powerful UV light source of a specific wavelength, allowing finished surfaces to be put into service almost immediately after application.
And speed doesn’t compromise quality. The result is a highly durable surface that is water resistant, dirt resistant, food safe, toy safe, and suitable for demanding commercial environments. Like other premium hard wax oils, it enhances the natural beauty of the timber, absorbing into the wood fibres, rather than creating a thick plastic-like film on the surface. This allows the grain and character of the wood to remain visible while still benefiting from exceptional protection.
The secret is the LED curing system
The process itself is surprisingly simple. The timber is prepared as normal, a thin coat of LED Smart-Oil is applied and the surface is then exposed to the dedicated curing lamp. The finish cures almost immediately, allowing the project to move straight to the next stage.

However, instant curing cannot be achieved using a generic UV torch, standard workshop light, or even sunlight exposure.
The Osmo UV LED Smartlight Pro Lamp has been specifically developed to deliver the correct wavelength and intensity required to cure the oil properly. Attempting to use an unsuitable light source may result in incomplete curing and poor performance.
Instant curing + Iow VOC + reliability = zero downtime
Professionals working with wood all face the same challenge: finished work often spends longer waiting to dry and cure than it does being made or refurbished. Osmo LED Smart-Oil removes that bottleneck with instant curing. Instead of finishing a piece and waiting, users can complete the entire process and move straight on to the next job - with no need to return the next day or the next week.
The low VOC formulation also makes it particularly attractive for on-site finishing. Compared with many traditional solvent-based finishes, odour levels are significantly reduced, making it easier to work in occupied commercial environments such as restaurants, retail units, offices and hospitality venues.
Another advantage is reliability. Traditional oil finishes can be heavily influenced by temperature and humidity, particularly during the colder months. In the UK, where workshop conditions are rarely ideal all year round, drying times can vary dramatically. Because curing is achieved using the dedicated LED system, results are far less dependent on ambient conditions, providing a more predictable finishing process throughout the year.

One coat or two? Choosing the right approach
For many vertical and lower-wear interior surfaces, a single coat is often sufficient. Applications such as wall panelling, shelving, cabinet carcasses, bookcases, exposed beams, cabinet fronts, chair legs, spindles, doors and bed frames can all achieve excellent protection while maintaining a natural matt appearance.
For higher-wear surfaces, a second coat is generally recommended. Vanity units, dressing tables, coffee tables, desktops, timber flooring, balustrades, chair seats and backs, window frames, bathroom surfaces, and staircases can all benefit from an additional coat. This provides a richer satin finish and extra confidence in demanding environments.
Even when a second coat is specified, the process remains dramatically faster than a conventional hardwax oil. Each coat can be cured immediately, eliminating the overnight drying periods normally associated with building a durable finish. And it's still faster than lacquer, which can also take 3-7 days to cure properly.
If you prefer a matt appearance but still want to benefit from the rapid curing technology, another option is to apply a single coat of LED Smart-Oil followed by a coat of Osmo Polyx-Oil. This allows the final sheen level to be tailored to the project while still delivering a substantial reduction in overall finishing time.
Three things to consider before you invest
1. It's expensive
The initial investment is higher than a traditional hardwax oil system because you need to buy the curing lamp. However, it's important to look beyond the purchase price alone. How much workshop space do drying racks occupy? How much labour is spent moving finished workpieces? How much time is lost waiting for finishes to cure? For many professional users, the productivity gains could outweigh the higher upfront cost.
2. Limited sheen options
One coat of Osmo LED Smart-Oil gives a 10-20% matt finish, while a second coat bumps it up to 40-50% satin. Since two coats are needed for floors and worktops, expect a satin finish there. For many commercial applications this won't be an issue, but some finishers may prefer the ultra-matt appearance available from certain traditional hardwax oil systems.Â
3. It's probably only for professionals
On balance, most DIY users are unlikely to benefit from the system. While the technology is undeniably impressive, the cost of the curing equipment means the greatest advantages are realised in commercial environments where faster turnaround times directly impact profitability. If you're refinishing a single coffee table at home, Osmo Polyx Rapid will often remain the more practical and economical choice. If you're running a busy workshop where time, space, and efficiency matter, this oil could be for you.
Our verdict: the biggest leap forward in hardwax oils for years
Most new wood finishes promise incremental improvements: a little more durability, a slightly easier application process, or a new colour option. Osmo LED Smart-Oil is different because it doesn't just improve the finish. It changes the workflow.
For professional wood finishers, the ability to apply, cure and return a surface to service almost immediately could eliminate one of the biggest inefficiencies in the finishing process. Reduced storage requirements, faster installations, less downtime and improved workshop productivity are benefits that extend far beyond the finish itself.
That's why we believe Osmo LED Smart-Oil could be the biggest innovation in professional hardwax oil finishing for years. Not because it changes what a hardwax oil looks like, but because it fundamentally changes how professionals can work with one.
FAQs
How can a hard wax oil be solvent free?
The base is a natural linseed oil that has been specially engineered to absorb and UV cure with no solvent. This means you have the richness of an oil finish, but with no smell or long cure time.
How long does it take to dry and then to cure?
ZERO seconds. After a few passes of the Osmo UV LED Smartlight Lamp the finish is 100% cured, ready for maximum usage and wear. This means you can refinish a surface on a restaurant table and it be ready for use immediately, or remove all the drying racks in your workshop as the surface will be ready to be assembled immediately, saving days or weeks of waiting.
Traditional Hard Wax Oils can take up to 2 weeks to fully cure, Lacquers and water based finishes up to 1 week. This is a game changer for professional wood finishers.
Does it yellow the wood?
Yes, just like the Osmo Polyx Oil, the LED Smart Oil warms or honeys the grain, making it pop. If you’re looking for a more neutral tone, the Natural colour keeps the grain light, leaving a light touch of white in the open grain.
How wear and stain resistant is it?
The LED Smart Oil has been put through Osmo’s rigorous DIN Standard (The German Wear Standard for Wear Testing) scientific testing (which is performed on every batch produced).
What’s the sheen?
With one coat the finished sheen is around a 10-20% Matt. A second coat increases the sheen level to a 40-50% Satin finish. There aren’t sheen options in the LED Smart Oil which means on hard wearing surfaces like floors and worktops, the finish will need to be Satin as 2 coats are required.
Can it be used on floors?
Yes absolutely, the LED Smart Oil has been developed to meet the same certification as the Osmo Polyx Oil, making it perfect for floors, table tops and worktops.
Is it smelly?
Not at all! As a solvent free, linseed oil based product, there are very low VOCs and no smell.
How do I clean and maintain the surface?
Anti Bac sprays break down the binders in the majority of finishes, causing the finish to go sticky (this is what you find in bars and restaurants). Only thick industrial 2-part bar top lacquers are truly resistant to commercial anti bacterial sprays. However, wood oil friendly anti-bac sprays do exist and are coming soon to Restorate. These kill bacteria, clean but look after the hard wax oil or varnish.
Is it food safe for kitchen surfaces?
Yes, the LED SmartOil is 100% food safe for all kitchen worktops and chopping boards.
Do you need to use the Osmo Smartlight Lamp?
Yes you do. The Osmo LED SmartOil has been developed to cure at a certain UV wavelength and power that can only be achieved by high power, highly calibrated, specialist equipment. The Osmo UV LED Smartlight Lamp is unusual in that there aren’t many portable lamps of this intensity available.
Will the oil cure without the Osmo UV Lamp?
In short, no. The LED Smart Oil will stay wet on the surface as it requires the UV lamp light to cure the formula.
How do you apply the LED Smart Oil for best results?
Thinly!
But first sand to a P180 grit on most woods such as Pine, Oak, Beech. P120 for dense woods like Walnut, Mahogany and Cedar, and P80-100 (followed by a wipe of methylated spirits) for oily, super dense exotic woods like Teak and Iroko. This helps the oil absorb into the wood grain.
The LED oil coverage should be in the region of 50m per litre, per coat. We, and Osmo, recommend working it into the wood grain with a white scrubby pad or the AbraClean on a 150mm orbital sander on larger surfaces, followed by wiping off excess in the direction of the grain with a cotton cloth. When there are no wipe marks, use the UV lamp to cure.
Can you mix colours?
You can! In fact customers already have been getting creative with dark first coats and light second coats to leave a lighter tone in the grain. If you like the tone of one coat, use a clear one for the second coat.
